What vehicle does this VIN identify?

The decoder can return the factory identity supplied for that VIN. Fields the source omits should remain “not reported,” not guessed.

Where was it assembled?

Position 11 and manufacturer data may identify the assembly plant. The WMI alone does not establish where the whole vehicle was assembled.

Does the check digit match?

The position-9 calculation checks transcription consistency for North American VINs; it does not prove the VIN is authentic or reveal vehicle history.

Year, make, model and trim

Use returned manufacturer data for year, make, model and trim; absent attributes should remain “not reported.”

Engine, body, drivetrain and plant

Keep engine, body, drivetrain and plant fields tied to the decoded VIN instead of inferring them from one character alone.

North American check-digit review

Calculate the North American check digit to catch transcription inconsistencies without treating a valid digit as proof of authenticity or history.

01 · Positions 1–3

World Manufacturer Identifier

The WMI identifies the manufacturer or responsible entity and broad region. It is not a reliable shortcut for where every component was made.

02 · Positions 4–9

Vehicle descriptor and check digit

Positions 4–8 describe attributes defined by the manufacturer. Position 9 is the North American mathematical check digit, not a model feature.

03 · Positions 10–17

Model year, plant and serial sequence

Position 10 encodes model year, position 11 commonly identifies the assembly plant and the final characters distinguish the production sequence.

Keep this limitation visible.Always compare the decoded identity with the physical labels and documents. A valid format can still be mistyped or attached to the wrong vehicle.
