Vehicle data sources and coverage
Different vehicle questions require different record categories. We identify the category, retrieval state and material limits alongside the result.
Vehicle identity and specifications
Factory identity can be derived from NHTSA vPIC and configured vehicle-data providers. These sources can establish attributes such as year, make, model, body, engine and assembly information when returned. They do not establish ownership or accident history.
Title, brand and odometer records
Production reports may use licensed U.S. title-history categories for title events, brands and reported mileage. Terminology, timing and participation vary by state and provider.
Damage, total-loss and theft signals
Covered insurance, damage, auction or theft-record categories may return an event. No provider sees every repair, cash transaction or jurisdiction, so a non-match is not proof that an event never occurred.
Recalls, listings and market context
Recall campaigns may come from NHTSA data; a manufacturer dealer should confirm VIN-specific open status. Listing and market-value context depends on dated comparables, location, mileage and condition assumptions.
How result states work
Record found, no record returned, not covered and unavailable are separate states. VIN Lookup does not convert a coverage gap or source outage into an all-clear result.
