Passenger Car
For a modern U.S.-market passenger car, a 17-character VIN can usually be validated and decoded for core identity such as manufacturer, model year, model, body class, engine or propulsion, and safety attributes when submitted data is available.

A pickup VIN can establish the manufacturer-submitted base identity and may return cab, body, engine, fuel, drive, restraint, and weight-related fields. It cannot by itself certify a truck’s exact payload, tow rating, axle, upfit, or safe working capacity.

An SUV or crossover VIN can identify the manufacturer-submitted base vehicle and may return body class, seating/restraint data, engine or propulsion, fuel, and drive type. It cannot confirm cargo, towing, off-road, battery, or crash condition.

One VIN decode may identify the chassis or completed vehicle, but buyers must reconcile chassis, coach, certification, title, and recall records rather than assuming one lookup describes the entire RV.

A modern on-road trailer VIN may identify its manufacturer, model year, trailer body type, and weight-related attributes when the manufacturer submitted them. It does not describe the tow vehicle, current load, every component, custom conversion, or structural condition.

An ATV or UTV may have a product identification number that resembles a road-vehicle VIN, and some modern examples decode in NHTSA data. Coverage is less uniform than for passenger cars, so confirm the identifier and model directly with the manufacturer and state documents.
