Craigslist Cars: Checking the History Without a Report
Craigslist car ads come with no history report and the site disclaims responsibility. Here is how to check a Craigslist car by VIN.
Enter your VIN. Check the car before you buy.
Identify the vehicle free, then choose whether to buy its reported history.
Title brands · Odometer records · Auction history, where reported
No subscription. No charge to check the VIN. Report contents vary by vehicle; applicable tax is shown at checkout.
See what the paid report includes →Craigslist provides no vehicle history report: none of its help, safety or terms pages read on October 9, 2026 mention CARFAX, AutoCheck or VIN checks. Its terms say the service is provided “as is” and any risk is assumed by the user, and its safety advice is to deal locally and face-to-face and to treat escrow requests as a possible scam. Before meeting, get the VIN, run free NHTSA and NICB checks and an NMVTIS title check, and buy a full report if the car is worth it.
- No report, no buyer protection from Craigslist.
- Deal locally and in person, per Craigslist’s own advice.
- Escrow requests can be a scam signal.
- Check the VIN before you travel to see the car.
One VIN. One $14.99 history report.
For $14.99, VIN Lookup delivers an original ClearVIN vehicle-history PDF for the VIN you enter. ClearVIN appears on the DOJ provider list; VIN Lookup resells its report and is not itself listed as an NMVTIS provider. The report may include data beyond the NMVTIS core, but the records returned vary by VIN.
The VIN decode is free. No card is needed until you choose to buy; applicable tax is shown at checkout. A missing record is not proof that an event never happened.Original provider PDF

What Craigslist says
Craigslist’s scam-avoidance page says to deal locally, face-to-face, and that following this one rule avoids most scam attempts; it adds that requests to use an escrow service can be a scam. Its terms state the service is provided “as is” and “as available” and that any risk of using it is assumed by the user.
There is no report, no inspection and no purchase protection from the platform.
| Step | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Get VIN | Seller | Free |
| Open recalls | NHTSA | Free |
| Theft and insurer salvage | NICB VINCheck | Free |
| Title brands, total loss | NMVTIS provider | Free–$9.98 |
| Full history | VIN Lookup (ClearVIN) | $14.99 |
Before you go see the car
Ask for the VIN by message and check it before travelling. A seller who refuses the VIN, wants payment by wire or gift card, or proposes shipping through an escrow service is giving you a reason to stop.
At the meeting, match the VIN on the dashboard, door label and title, and check that the seller’s ID matches the name on the title.
If the Craigslist listing has no free report
Ask the seller first: dealers usually hold a CARFAX or AutoCheck subscription and can send a current report for the exact VIN. A private seller may not, and a screenshot from a seller is a lead, not proof — the VIN, date and provider must match the car.
If no one supplies one, check title brands and total losses through a DOJ-listed NMVTIS provider (free at Carsforsale.com, $9.98 at Titlecheck.us), recalls at NHTSA and theft at NICB, all free or near it. For auction records, photos and damage descriptions, VIN Lookup sells the original ClearVIN report for $14.99 once, or three for $29.99 when you are comparing several cars.
