On October 8, 2026, seven websites sold reports marketed as cheap CARFAX reports for $3.99 to $18.99 each: CheapVINReport ($3.99), CheapVHR ($4.49), CarfaxDeals.us ($5.00), CheapestCarfax ($5.99), CarfaxCheaper ($5.99), CarfaxDeals.com ($7.99) and VinInfoHub ($18.99). Each except CheapVHR states that it is not affiliated with CARFAX, Inc. Four publish no operator name, and on four sites the homepage refund promise is broader than the written refund policy. None of the seven appears on the DOJ list of approved NMVTIS providers.

  • These are independent resellers or report sites, not CARFAX.
  • Their marketing and their terms often disagree on refunds and on what you receive.
  • Only three name the company behind the site.
  • For federal title data, DOJ-listed providers sell NMVTIS reports from free to about $10.

One VIN. One $14.99 history report.

For $14.99, VIN Lookup delivers an original ClearVIN vehicle-history PDF for the VIN you enter. ClearVIN appears on the DOJ provider list; VIN Lookup resells its report and is not itself listed as an NMVTIS provider. The report may include data beyond the NMVTIS core, but the records returned vary by VIN.

The VIN decode is free. No card is needed until you choose to buy; applicable tax is shown at checkout. A missing record is not proof that an event never happened.

The seven sites side by side

Each figure was read on the site’s own homepage, pricing, terms or refund page on October 8, 2026. “Claims an original CARFAX report” records what the site says, not something we verified; we did not buy from any of them.

The refund column reports the written refund policy. Several homepages advertise a 30-day or 100% money-back guarantee while the policy limits refunds to non-delivery, a failed report or an invalid VIN.

What “cheap CARFAX” can and cannot mean

The sites describe their product in three different ways: an original CARFAX report bought in bulk and resold, an AutoCheck report, or their own report built from other databases and described as equivalent. Those are different products. A buyer cannot tell which one was delivered from the price, and several sites describe it differently on different pages.

Because none of them is CARFAX, CARFAX’s own guarantees and support do not apply to a purchase made there. Your recourse is the reseller’s refund policy and, for a card payment, your card issuer’s dispute process.

Lower-risk ways to pay less

Ask a dealer for the report: many listings include a free CARFAX or AutoCheck report. For title brands and total losses, DOJ-listed providers sell NMVTIS reports for free (Carsforsale.com) or $9.98 (Titlecheck.us). For a commercial report with auction and damage records from a named provider, single reports start at $14.99.

VIN Lookup resells ClearVIN — a DOJ-listed provider — and says so: $14.99 once, original ClearVIN PDF, no subscription. It does not sell CARFAX reports.
