Is VIN Lookup free?

The VIN validation and identity decode are free with no payment card. A complete history report is optional and paid, as a one-time purchase.

What does the free VIN check include?

The free check returns vehicle identity — year, make, model, factory specifications when returned — plus the source name and retrieval time.

Do I need a credit card for the free VIN check?

No. The free VIN check needs no payment card and no account. A charge is only possible after you confirm a VIN and start checkout yourself.

What are the free VIN findings shown before I pay?

They are limited provider indicators — counts of listing images, auction records and recall campaigns — not a complete-history or clean-history finding.

Does the free VIN check show accidents or title brands?

No. A decoder identifies the vehicle as built. Accidents, title brands, odometer, theft, lien and ownership records need separate history sources.

Is a VIN decode the same as a vehicle history report?

A free VIN decode identifies factory specifications. A separate paid history report covers reported title, damage and mileage records.

Why does VIN Lookup say my VIN must be 17 characters?

A report is generated for one exact vehicle, and U.S.-market road vehicles since the 1981 model year carry a 17-character VIN. The form counts as you type.

Why does it say the VIN check digit does not match?

The ninth character does not match the value calculated from the other sixteen. Usually a typo — recheck 0 against O and 1 against I on the vehicle.

Why are the letters I, O and Q not allowed in my VIN?

A 17-character VIN never contains I, O or Q. If the checker flags one, the character is almost always the number 1 or the number 0 instead.

Where do I find the VIN on my car?

Look through the driver-side windshield at the dashboard, at the driver-door jamb label, or on the title, registration and insurance card.

Can I look up a car by license plate instead of VIN?

Not for a live search right now. The license plate page publishes the plate-to-VIN workflow, but live matching is enabled only when provider access is active.

What is in the paid VIN Lookup report?

The paid report is the original provider PDF for one VIN: title brands, odometer readings, accidents, theft, liens and sales records, when reported.

Can I see a sample report before I buy?

Do I need an account to buy a report?

No. Guest checkout is fully supported; your email is collected at payment and linking the finished order to an account afterwards is optional.

What is ClearVIN?

ClearVIN is the vehicle-data provider that generates the report VIN Lookup sells, which is why the PDF carries their name. Your purchase is with VIN Lookup.

What is NMVTIS?

NMVTIS is the federal National Motor Vehicle Title Information System: a title and brand history source for U.S.-titled cars, not a repair-history database.

Is a VIN Lookup report the same as a Carfax report?

No. VIN Lookup delivers an original ClearVIN report for $14.99; CARFAX publishes its own report and offers a conditional Buyback Guarantee that VIN Lookup does not.

Does VIN Lookup work for cars outside the United States?

VIN Lookup is a United States service. The paid report covers automobiles titled in the U.S., prices are in U.S. dollars, and plate search is U.S.-only.

Does every VIN return every record category?

Report coverage varies by VIN, source, jurisdiction and date. An empty category does not prove the vehicle has a clean history.

Is it safe to pay on VIN Lookup?

You never type card details on VIN Lookup. Payment runs on Dodo Payments' own hosted checkout, and VIN Lookup does not need to receive full card numbers.

Is VIN Lookup a legitimate business?

Yes, and it is checkable: a named report provider, published terms and refund policy, a support inbox, and a free decode and real sample before you pay.

Does VIN Lookup change or rewrite the ClearVIN report?

No. The terms state the complete ClearVIN report is stored and delivered without rewriting, restyling or removing attribution and disclaimers.

Does the report cover motorcycles, RVs and trucks?

Yes in principle: NMVTIS covers automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, RVs and motor homes. You still need a 17-character VIN, and coverage varies by vehicle.

Does the report include vehicle photos?

Sometimes, never guaranteed. Auction and sales records carry photos only when a source has them on file for that VIN, so photos are a bonus, not a feature.

Does the report include service or repair records?

Service records are not a listed VIN Lookup report category. NMVTIS does not include detailed repair history; ask for invoices separately.

Does the report include open recalls?

It can show safety campaigns, but not confirmed open status. Only NHTSA, the manufacturer or a dealer confirms whether a specific VIN still needs the repair.

How much does a VIN Lookup report cost?

One report costs $14.99, three credits cost $29.99 and five cost $44.99 — all one-time purchases, with the VIN identity decode free.

Is VIN Lookup a subscription?

No. Every option is a one-time purchase: no membership, no automatic renewal, no recurring charge, and nothing to cancel afterwards.

How do the 3-report and 5-report packs work?

A pack is three or five report credits added to your order; after payment you assign one VIN per credit, one at a time, whenever you are ready.

When is my card charged?

Your card is charged only after you confirm the VIN and finish payment on the secure payment page. Reviewing your order costs nothing.

Which email address will my report be sent to?

Your report link goes to the email on the completed payment — your verified account email if you were signed in, otherwise the one you type at checkout.

What is the difference between the 3-report and 5-report packs?

Only the credit count and the price. The 3-pack is $29.99 for three reports, the 5-pack $44.99 for five. Same report, same one-time terms.

Are taxes added at checkout?

They can be. The review page shows $14.99 as the total before applicable tax, and any legally required tax is shown before you confirm payment.

Can I buy a pack without entering a VIN first?

Yes. A pack is sold as report credits, so checkout runs with no VIN. Only the single $14.99 report needs its VIN before payment.

What currency are VIN Lookup prices in?

U.S. dollars. Every listed price is USD, checkout is created in USD with no currency selector, and a payment in another currency is rejected.

Does VIN Lookup have promo or discount codes?

Only ever one, and only when it is running. If a code is active it is displayed on the pricing page itself — there is no hidden coupon to hunt for.

Why does the checkout button say report purchases are not available?

The button is disabled because paid report purchasing is switched off right now. Nothing is wrong with your VIN or your card, and no payment can start.

What does 'Secure checkout is temporarily unavailable' mean?

It means the purchase stopped before any payment began. That message ends with 'no payment was started', and your free VIN results stay available.

What if I entered the wrong VIN before paying?

Fix it before you pay — nothing is charged yet. Search the corrected VIN again on the free VIN check and confirm the vehicle that comes back.

Can I change the VIN after I paid for a single report?

No. A single report is locked to the VIN on the review page, and the report is created for that VIN as soon as payment is confirmed.

Will I be charged twice if I click the payment button twice?

Repeated Pay clicks reuse the same checkout request. The button disables after the first click to help prevent duplicate payments.

Why does it say too many checkout attempts?

You reached the limit of 10 checkout starts per hour from one connection. No payment was taken; wait for the hour to pass and try again.

What happens if checkout takes too long to respond?

The page stops waiting after 15 seconds and tells you it could not confirm whether a session was created. Check the page before retrying.

What happens if I close the payment page before paying?

Nothing is charged and no report is created. Cancelling sends you back to your vehicle or the pricing page with your options still open.

After payment: delivery

How is the report delivered after I pay?

The report arrives in three places from one order: the order page you land on after payment, a private report page, and an email carrying links to both.

How long does the report take after payment?

No delivery time is promised. The report is released as soon as the provider document is validated; one documented request returned a PDF in 10.6 seconds.

Can I close the page while my report is being prepared?

Yes. Once payment is confirmed, the order page itself says you can close it: the secure report link is emailed when the report is ready.

I did not receive the report email — what should I do?

Do not pay again. The report does not depend on the email: open the order page, or sign in to My Reports with the address you used at checkout.

What does ‘We’re manually checking your report’ mean?

It means the payment is recorded and automatic delivery is paused so a person can verify the order, protecting you from a duplicate purchase or a wrong report.

What does 'We could not complete this report' mean?

It means your payment was confirmed but report preparation stopped for good. Do not pay again — contact report support so the order can be reviewed.

What does 'No provider record found' mean?

It means the provider held no usable vehicle-history record for that VIN, so no report can be produced. In a pack, the credit comes back to your wallet.

What does the report-ready email look like?

It comes from VIN Lookup with the subject “Your [vehicle] report is ready”, and contains View report and Download PDF links plus a reference.

Is the PDF attached to the email?

The report-ready email links to View report and Download PDF. The private PDF requires verified access and is not an attachment.

What do the progress steps on the order page mean?

The four steps are Confirming payment (then Payment confirmed), Collecting records, Preparing report and Report ready. The page advances itself.

Why does the order page say 'Confirming your payment'?

It means our server has not yet received the payment provider's confirmation. The page waits, updates itself, and asks you not to submit a second payment.

What does 'Payment was not completed' mean?

It means no completed payment was recorded for that attempt, so no report was generated and no credit created. A paid order never shows this message.

Finding and opening your report

How do I find my VIN Lookup order?

Sign in to My Reports with the same email you used at checkout. Paid orders, ready PDFs and unused report credits are listed there for the verified account.

How do I open the report PDF?

Use the 'View report' button on your report page. It opens the original ClearVIN PDF in a new tab, and the same document is embedded in the page itself.

How do I download my report as a PDF?

Press 'Download PDF' on the report page or in My Reports. The file saves as clearvin-original-report-<report id>.pdf after an integrity check.

Can I re-download my report later?

Yes. A ready report stays available to view or download from My Reports while the order remains paid with active access. No expiry date is published.

Can I open my report on another device?

Yes. Sign in with the same verified email you used at checkout and the report opens on any device from My Reports. Here is how the two access paths work.

Why does my report link say it needs verified access?

That message means this browser could not prove the report is yours - not that the report is missing. Sign in with the checkout email to open it again.

Why does it say 'This order is not visible from here'?

It means this browser cannot see your order. If you already paid, nothing is lost and you should not pay again - sign in with the checkout email instead.

What should I do if the PDF won't open?

Open the report in a new tab first, then download the PDF and open it in a reader app. Here is the full order of troubleshooting and the refund fallback.

Where is my order number or reference?

Your order reference is the first eight characters of the order ID in capitals. It is on the secure order page, on each My Reports card, and in your emails.

Why did my download link expire?

Because the file URL itself is signed to last 60 seconds. Press Download PDF on your report page again and a brand-new signed link is created for you.

How long can my checkout browser open the report without signing in?

Seven days. Checkout leaves a private access token in that browser and the matching record expires a week later. After that, sign in with the checkout email.

What does “Report access is temporarily unavailable” mean?

It means the report page could not reach the status service on that attempt. Your report is not lost or replaced, and the page keeps retrying.

Account and My Reports

Why does it say 'Use the same email as secure checkout'?

The account you are signed into does not match the email on the purchase, so the order cannot attach. Sign out and sign back in with the checkout address.

Why are my reports locked until my email is verified?

My Reports only loads for accounts with a verified email. Restart the secure sign-in for a fresh six-digit code - no new account or purchase is created.

What is the My Reports dashboard?

My Reports is the signed-in page holding your ready reports, unused report credits and every past purchase, with one card per order.

Do I have to save my order to an account?

No. Saving the order to an account is optional — the secure checkout link keeps working in that browser for seven days, but an account is durable.

How do I sign in to VIN Lookup?

Three ways: Continue with Google, a six-digit code emailed to you, or a password if you set one. Use the email address you gave at checkout.

Why does it say this purchase belongs to another verified account?

It means the order is already owned by a different verified account. Nothing is lost — sign in with the same email you entered at checkout.

Why does the dashboard say my library could not refresh?

It means one database read failed on that page load, not that anything was lost. Your orders and PDFs are stored server-side. Reload in a few minutes.

Can I delete my VIN Lookup account or data?

Yes, by asking: contact support with the subject Privacy request. There is no self-serve delete button, and some order and tax records are kept.

Packs and credits

How do I use a report credit on a VIN?

Spend a pack credit from the report wallet on your order page or dashboard: type one 17-character VIN, then press Generate this report.

Do VIN Lookup report credits expire?

No. An unused report credit stays on your paid order until you spend it on a VIN — nothing in the purchase or the code puts a date on it.

Can I use a report credit on any VIN?

Use a wallet credit for any valid 17-character VIN, with one credit per vehicle. Enter the VIN from your order page when ready.

How do I see how many credits I have left?

A pack order page shows a counter reading remaining of total, and your dashboard shows a REPORT CREDITS tile totalling unused credits across orders.

What happens to my credit if no record is found for a VIN?

Your credit comes back. When the provider holds no vehicle-history record for a VIN, the failed attempt is not counted as spent and the balance returns.

When is a report credit actually used up?

A credit is held when you assign a VIN and consumed only once the report is delivered. A confirmed non-billable failure returns the held credit.

What if I enter the same VIN twice on a pack?

No second credit is used. A repeat VIN on the same pack matches the job that already exists, and the wallet tells you no second credit was spent.

Can I give a report credit to someone else?

Report credits stay with the purchasing order and its authorized account or browser. Credits and the report licence are not transferable.

What does 'This order is temporarily protected' mean?

It means new VIN assignments on that order are paused while it is reconciled. Your payment stands, and delivered reports stay openable during a review.

Can I add more credits to my order later?

Not to an existing order — there is no top-up. You buy another one-time order, and the dashboard totals the credits from all of your orders together.

Refunds, disputes and problems

Can I get a refund on a VIN Lookup report?

Refund requests are reviewed, not automatic. Duplicate charges, non-delivery, a report that will not open and our VIN mismatch are the eligible cases.

How do I request a refund review?

Write to us through the contact page with your checkout email, order ID, the last six VIN characters and a description of the issue.

I was charged twice — what should I do?

Do not pay again. A duplicate charge for the same order is listed as eligible for refund review; send both charge details through the contact page.

Can I get a refund if the report has few or empty records?

Usually not. The policy states that an empty category does not by itself make a delivered report defective, and generated reports are generally final.

Can I get a refund if my report was never delivered?

Non-delivery is named in the refund policy as eligible for review, and a paid order with no usable provider record is handled by email.

What if the VIN on the report is different from the one I entered?

Contact support. A delivered VIN that differs from the confirmed checkout VIN because of our error is listed as eligible for refund review.

Can I get a refund for unused pack credits?

The refund policy does not state a refund for unused pack credits. You can ask for a review through the contact page, and the credits do not expire.

How long does a refund take to show up?

No timeframe is promised. Approved refunds go back through the original payment method, and financial institutions control when the money actually posts.

Does a refund remove access to the report?

Yes. A recorded full refund marks the order refunded and revokes the report, so it can no longer be opened or downloaded from any link or device.

What happens if I dispute the charge with my bank?

Access pauses the moment a dispute is recorded, and if the dispute is resolved against the order the report and any unused credits are revoked for good.

What does 'Payment under review' mean?

It means a dispute was recorded against your payment and the provider is reviewing it, so report access is paused rather than removed while that runs.

Can I cancel a VIN Lookup order after paying?

There is no cancel action and nothing recurring to cancel. The report is queued as soon as payment is confirmed, so a refund review is the route instead.

Privacy and data

Does the report show previous owners' names?

Vehicle history reports do not disclose previous owners’ names, addresses or contact details. Ownership records may show dates and use type.

What information does VIN Lookup keep about my order?

The order record, the VIN stored encrypted, your checkout email, amounts and status, the report file and access activity - never full card numbers.

Does VIN Lookup store my card number?

Card details are entered on the payment provider’s checkout. VIN Lookup does not need your full card number to deliver a report.

Is my VIN search private?

The free VIN check needs no account. VIN Lookup's own conversion counters hold no VIN, email or raw IP, and no VIN is captured on the result page. A purchased VIN is stored encrypted.

Can I share or resell my report?

No reselling, publishing or redistributing. The report is licensed for your own internal use in evaluating that one vehicle, and you may keep a copy.

Is my VIN shared with ClearVIN?

Yes: the VIN goes to ClearVIN for the history preview the check page requests automatically, and for a purchased report. The identity decode uses other sources.

Why are my VIN and email partly hidden on the order page?

On purpose. The order page shows only the last six VIN characters and a masked email so a shared screen cannot leak them. Check the last six against your VIN.

Reading the report

What does 'no record returned' mean on my report?

It means the covered sources held no matching record for your VIN in that category. It is not a clean-history finding and not a source outage.

Does a clean report mean the car has no problems?

No. A clean report means no covered source returned a record. Unreported repairs, unbranded damage and reporting delays are invisible to every database.

Can the report replace a pre-purchase inspection?

No. Federal NMVTIS wording states a vehicle history report is not a substitute for an independent inspection. They answer different questions.

Why is a recent accident or sale missing from my report?

Usually reporting lag or a gap in coverage. States update NMVTIS at different speeds, and damage nobody declared or branded may never be reported.

How do I report an error in my report?

Send a data correction request through the contact page with the report ID, the affected category, why the record looks wrong and a supporting source.

What is a title brand on my report?

A title brand is a state-applied warning on a vehicle title, such as salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon or junk. Brand names and definitions vary by state.

What is the difference between a salvage and a rebuilt title?

Salvage marks the damage or total-loss event; rebuilt marks a later road-use status. Rebuilt does not erase the earlier salvage or junk record.

What does a lien on my report mean?

A lien means a covered record shows someone holds a financial interest in the vehicle. You can still buy it, but the payoff and release have to be documented.

What does an odometer rollback indicator mean?

It flags mileage that does not move forward logically, usually a lower later reading. It is a discrepancy to investigate, not automatic proof of fraud.
