See what the paid report includes →Before importing a U.S. car to the UK, review its original title, available U.S. history and repair evidence, then confirm the UK approval and registration route. GOV.UK specifically tells buyers to check whether a damaged or salvaged vehicle can be registered before importing it. VIN Lookup’s optional $14.99 report helps investigate the U.S. period; it does not replace HMRC notification, vehicle approval, DVLA registration or a UK history check.
- Resolve salvage and title questions before arranging freight.
- Keep miles and kilometres explicit when comparing odometer readings.
- UK NOVA is an arrival notification; it is not a vehicle history report.
What an actual U.S. report can change before purchase
Our public ClearVIN sample for the 2013 Toyota Sienna documents Salvage, Rebuilt and Not Actual title brands. Those are findings about one sample vehicle, not predictions about your car. The original document and dated entries are available on our sample-report page. VIN Lookup sells ClearVIN-generated reports and has a commercial interest in this recommendation.
For an import buyer, that evidence creates specific questions: Which document records the brand? What repairs followed? Does the displayed mileage represent actual mileage? Ask the seller for the original title and repair evidence, and take those documents to the destination authority before assuming the vehicle can be registered. A U.S. rebuilt title is not an Austrian or British approval.
| Record or claim | What to compare | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Title brand | Original U.S. title and dated report entries | Ask the destination authority about this vehicle before shipping |
| Auction damage | Dated listing photos, repair invoices and an inspection | Budget for unresolved repairs; do not rely on current listing photos alone |
| Mileage | Original readings, dates and miles/kilometres | Investigate a decrease only after normalizing the units |
| No record returned | Seller documents and uncovered periods | Treat the gap as unknown, not a clean bill of health |

See what the paid report includes →The UK import sequence for a shipped vehicle
For a vehicle shipped from the U.S., GOV.UK describes a customs declaration through a shipping company or customs agent, applicable VAT and customs duty, notification to HMRC within 14 days of arrival, vehicle approval, DVLA registration and tax, and insurance before road use. The official guide distinguishes shipped vehicles from those brought in by ferry or the Channel Tunnel; follow the sequence that matches your import.
Use the linked vehicle-approval guidance to establish the applicable route or exemption for your car. Ask about the specific vehicle and its documentation before paying for modifications. This guide is a purchase checklist, not a finding that a particular U.S. vehicle will pass UK approval.
Compare the U.S. period with the seller’s UK description
If the car is already advertised in Britain, ask when it arrived, which U.S. title accompanied it and which records cover the period before the UK registration. A clean-looking current advert does not explain an earlier U.S. auction damage entry. Match the VIN across the report, title and physical vehicle, then ask for the dated repair evidence.
Do not translate a U.S. salvage or rebuilt brand automatically into a UK insurance category. Keep the original label and issuing jurisdiction visible and ask the responsible authority or insurer what it means for the proposed registration and cover.
Build a bid ceiling from itemized quotes
Start with the maximum total you are willing to spend once the vehicle is usable in the UK. Subtract separately quoted shipping, insurance, customs handling, applicable taxes, port storage, modifications, approval, registration and repairs. The remainder is your purchase budget, before any auction or broker fee. Use current written quotes rather than a seller’s single all-in promise.
As a planning example only, a £20,000 total budget with £5,000 reserved for documented non-purchase costs leaves £15,000 for the vehicle and purchase fees. Those amounts are illustrative, not a current shipping or tax quote. Recalculate if the report or inspection reveals additional repairs.
Choose the next check by the unanswered question
Use the U.S. report to investigate available title, mileage and sale evidence before export. For what happened after arrival, collect UK documentation and the relevant local checks. For repair quality, pay for an independent inspection. One product cannot answer all three questions.
The free VIN check identifies the car before you decide whether to buy the $14.99 original provider report. Read the public sample to understand its evidence and limitations. Keep the delivered PDF with the purchase records so dates and sources remain available if a later listing or document conflicts.
Buyer checklist
- Match the VIN on the car, original title and seller documents.
- Review U.S. title brands and available pre-export history.
- Confirm registrability of a damaged or salvaged car before shipping.
- Obtain itemized freight, tax and modification quotes.
- Follow the relevant HMRC, approval and DVLA steps.
- Arrange insurance and an independent condition inspection.
What this research cannot prove
- A U.S. report is not a UK registration or insurance-category certificate.
- A missing record does not prove a damage-free history.
- Tax, approval and exemption decisions depend on the actual import.

Frequently asked questions
Is a UK history check enough for an imported American car?
Check which periods and countries its actual records cover. If the pre-export U.S. history is missing, obtain the original U.S. title and investigate that period separately.
Can I import a salvage car from the USA to the UK?
Do not assume it can be registered. GOV.UK explicitly advises checking registration eligibility for damaged or salvaged vehicles before importing. Resolve that with the relevant authority using the original documents.
Does buying a VIN report complete the NOVA process?
No. NOVA is the UK Notification of Vehicle Arrivals process with HMRC. A commercial history report does not submit it or satisfy vehicle approval and registration requirements.
