A car built in one year and sold the next carries a start date that only the manufacturer’s record confirms.
Kia coverage runs from the Date of First Service recorded against the VIN. Add the VIN in the Kia Owners Portal, or ask a Kia dealer for a printed VIN warranty status. Either shows the start date and which coverages remain. Pay attention to ownership: the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is limited to the original purchaser and certified pre-owned buyers.
Kia factory warranty coverage
These are Kia’s published U.S. coverage periods for new vehicles. Each runs from the warranty start date, and whichever limit — time or mileage — is reached first ends that coverage.

How to check remaining coverage on a VIN
- Locate the 17-character VIN on the driver's-side dashboard, the certification label on the driver's-side center pillar, or your registration, title or insurance card.
- Create or sign in to an account at owners.kia.com and add the vehicle by VIN to see the warranty and service documents attached to that specific car.
- Identify the Date of First Service, which is when the vehicle was first delivered, leased or put into company use. Every Kia coverage period is measured from that date, not the model year.
- Ask a Kia dealer's service department for a printed VIN warranty status. This confirms the start date and, critically, whether the car is still with its original purchaser or is a Certified Pre-Owned Kia, which decides the powertrain term.
- Compare the start date and current odometer against each limit above. Coverage ends at whichever comes first, so a four-year-old Kia with 65,000 miles is already past the basic warranty.
Does the warranty transfer to a second owner?
Kia's warranty manual states that any remaining portion of any warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners, except the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, which is limited to the original owner. Second and subsequent owners get powertrain components for 5 years or 60,000 miles instead. One important exception: buying a Certified Pre-Owned Kia restores the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage.
What a warranty check cannot tell you
- Whether previous damage or modification has voided coverage on a specific component.
- Whether required maintenance was performed — manufacturers can deny claims where servicing was neglected.
- Anything about title brands, accident history, or odometer records; those are separate VIN checks.
- The status of open safety recalls, which are repaired free of charge regardless of warranty.
