Volkswagen does not run an open VIN warranty checker. To confirm remaining coverage, give the VIN to any authorized Volkswagen dealer and ask for the in-service date and warranty status, or view the vehicle in a VW owner account. Coverage begins on the date the car was delivered to its first purchaser or lessee, so it can start well after the model year suggests.
Volkswagen factory warranty coverage
These are Volkswagen’s published U.S. coverage periods for new vehicles. Each runs from the warranty start date, and whichever limit — time or mileage — is reached first ends that coverage.

How to check remaining coverage on a VIN
- Find the 17-character VIN at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, in the driver's door jamb, or on the title and registration.
- Ask an authorized Volkswagen dealer's service department to run the VIN and report the in-service date plus the status of each warranty.
- Count forward from that in-service date, not the model year, to see how much of the 4-year/50,000-mile term remains.
- Compare the odometer against 50,000 miles for basic coverage and 100,000 miles for corrosion perforation, since coverage ends at whichever limit comes first.
- On an ID. model, ask separately about the high-voltage battery warranty, which runs to 8 years or 100,000 miles and covers capacity below 70 percent.
Does the warranty transfer to a second owner?
Volkswagen's New Vehicle Limited Warranty and High-Voltage System Limited Warranty are automatically transferred at no cost when the vehicle changes hands inside the warranty period, so a second owner keeps the full remaining term with no reduction. One exception matters when buying used: the high-voltage coverage does not apply to vehicles used commercially, such as taxi, courier, delivery or limousine service, and that exclusion still stands after the car is sold to a retail owner.
What a warranty check cannot tell you
- Whether previous damage or modification has voided coverage on a specific component.
- Whether required maintenance was performed — manufacturers can deny claims where servicing was neglected.
- Anything about title brands, accident history, or odometer records; those are separate VIN checks.
- The status of open safety recalls, which are repaired free of charge regardless of warranty.
