Research a used EV like any other vehicle—VIN, title, recalls, loss, mileage, theft, and inspection—then add battery state-of-health evidence, warranty status, fast-charge history where available, charging-port and cable compatibility, underbody and coolant inspection, software ownership, and documented repair of any high-voltage damage. A vehicle-history report cannot measure current battery capacity.

Verify the EV configuration and support
Decode the VIN and confirm battery or drivetrain version, model year, charging connector, onboard-charger capability, included adapters and cable, and whether connected services transfer. Use manufacturer records for build-specific equipment because model-line marketing can hide midyear changes.
Check NHTSA and manufacturer recalls, including battery, charging, software, and restraint campaigns. Confirm repair completion and whether an open remedy affects parking or charging instructions.
Measure battery condition with appropriate evidence
Ask for the manufacturer health report or diagnostic data available for that model, remaining battery warranty, replacement or module invoices, and recent full-charge range in known conditions. State of charge is not state of health, and a dashboard range prediction is not a capacity test.
A qualified EV technician can inspect pack enclosure, underbody strikes, coolant leaks, isolation faults, charging errors, thermal history where accessible, and diagnostic codes. Avoid relying on a generic inspection that lacks high-voltage procedures.
Trace damage, charging, and ownership details
Flood, fire, collision, and salvage history require special scrutiny around the pack, cooling loop, charge port, pyrotechnic disconnects, and manufacturer repair restrictions. Verify that replacement components and calibrations are documented.
Confirm home and public charging options at your location, insurance, battery warranty transfer, title status, and any tax-credit eligibility from current official rules. Do not price a vehicle assuming an incentive without VIN- and buyer-specific verification.
