How to Check a Used Car for Flood-Damage History

Ask for pre-repair photos and insurer documents. A seller who acquired the car shortly after an auction or out-of-state transfer should be able to explain where it came from and what work was done.

Inspect beyond carpets and smell

Cleaning can remove obvious odor and staining. A qualified inspection should look under carpets and trim, inside the spare-tire well, at seat rails, wiring connectors, fuse boxes, low-mounted control modules, and hidden cavities. Mixed new and corroded components can reveal selective replacement.

Check warning lamps at startup, diagnostic trouble codes, restraint and advanced-driver-assistance systems, charging components on electrified vehicles, and evidence of repeated electrical faults. A dry vehicle today can still carry corrosion from earlier exposure.

Treat documentation gaps as price and risk information

If the seller cannot produce loss details or repair records, you may not be able to distinguish a minor water event from deep submersion. The correct response is not to invent certainty from a clean report; it is to reduce reliance on the vehicle or walk away.
