Autotrader Vehicle History Report: When the AutoCheck Is Free
Some Autotrader dealer listings include a free AutoCheck report and others only a summary. Its Private Seller Exchange includes one on every vehicle.
Enter your VIN. Check the car before you buy.
Identify the vehicle free, then choose whether to buy its reported history.
Title brands · Odometer records · Auction history, where reported
No subscription. No charge to check the VIN. Report contents vary by vehicle; applicable tax is shown at checkout.
See what the paid report includes →On Autotrader, a free vehicle history report depends on the listing. On October 9, 2026, one dealer listing we read showed “View the free report” for an Experian AutoCheck report, while another showed only an AutoCheck summary with “Request a report from dealer | Buy a report”. Autotrader’s Private Seller Exchange states that each vehicle includes a complimentary AutoCheck history report. Autotrader also offers a free AutoCheck record-count search by VIN or plate; the full report is paid.
- Dealer listings: free AutoCheck on some, summary only on others.
- Private Seller Exchange: complimentary AutoCheck on each vehicle.
- The free VIN search gives record counts, not the records.
- We saw no CARFAX link on the listings we read.
One VIN. One $14.99 history report.
For $14.99, VIN Lookup delivers an original ClearVIN vehicle-history PDF for the VIN you enter. ClearVIN appears on the DOJ provider list; VIN Lookup resells its report and is not itself listed as an NMVTIS provider. The report may include data beyond the NMVTIS core, but the records returned vary by VIN.
The VIN decode is free. No card is needed until you choose to buy; applicable tax is shown at checkout. A missing record is not proof that an event never happened.Original provider PDF

What we saw on Autotrader listings
A 2023 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 from a Los Angeles dealer showed “No Accident or Damage Reported | Multiple Owners | View the free report”. A 2026 Genesis GV70 from a Cerritos dealer showed the same summary style but “Request a report from dealer | Buy a report” instead of a free link. The page does not say why one is free and the other is not.
The report link is labelled Experian AutoCheck offered by Kelley Blue Book. Autotrader’s separate VIN-check page offers a free search that returns the number of records in the full AutoCheck report and an option to order the full report.
| Where | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer listing with free link | Full AutoCheck report | Free |
| Dealer listing without link | Summary; request or buy | Ask dealer or pay |
| Private Seller Exchange | Complimentary AutoCheck | Free |
| Autotrader VIN search | Record counts | Free; full report paid |
Private Seller Exchange
Autotrader’s marketplace page says each vehicle in its Private Seller Exchange includes a complimentary AutoCheck history report and that Autotrader confirms the car’s ownership and accident history. Checkout services in that program carry a fee based on the registration state.
Outside that program, a private-party car advertised on Autotrader may have no report at all.
If the Autotrader listing has no free report
Ask the seller first: dealers usually hold a CARFAX or AutoCheck subscription and can send a current report for the exact VIN. A private seller may not, and a screenshot from a seller is a lead, not proof — the VIN, date and provider must match the car.
If no one supplies one, check title brands and total losses through a DOJ-listed NMVTIS provider (free at Carsforsale.com, $9.98 at Titlecheck.us), recalls at NHTSA and theft at NICB, all free or near it. For auction records, photos and damage descriptions, VIN Lookup sells the original ClearVIN report for $14.99 once, or three for $29.99 when you are comparing several cars.
Buyer checklist
- Look for “View the free report” on the listing.
- If absent, request it from the dealer.
- Use the free VIN search only as a screen.
- Match the VIN in the listing to the car.
- Check open recalls free at NHTSA.
- Check theft and insurer salvage at NICB VINCheck.
What this research cannot prove
- Platform policies and listing features change; we read them on October 9, 2026, from outside the United States.
- A free report or summary shows only what was reported to its provider.
- Listings we sampled may not represent every listing on the platform.
