Direct answer

On October 9, 2026, only Cars & Bids stated that every listing comes with a free vehicle history report. Autotrader’s Private Seller Exchange includes a complimentary AutoCheck on each vehicle, Enterprise Car Sales includes a free third-party report with its certified cars, and eBay Motors says most listings come with a free AutoCheck. Autotrader and Cars.com dealer listings include one on some listings only; TrueCar and CarGurus show an AutoCheck summary but not a free full report. Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist pages we read mention no report. Copart and IAA sell “as is” and point buyers to paid reports.

  • Free reports are mostly AutoCheck, and usually only on some listings.
  • A summary line (“0 accidents, 1 owner”) is not the full report.
  • Private-seller marketplaces rarely include any report.
  • Salvage auctions sell as is: the history check is your job before bidding.
VIN LOOKUP · ONE-TIME REPORT

One VIN. One $14.99 history report.

For $14.99, VIN Lookup delivers an original ClearVIN vehicle-history PDF for the VIN you enter. ClearVIN appears on the DOJ provider list; VIN Lookup resells its report and is not itself listed as an NMVTIS provider. The report may include data beyond the NMVTIS core, but the records returned vary by VIN.

The VIN decode is free. No card is needed until you choose to buy; applicable tax is shown at checkout. A missing record is not proof that an event never happened.

The 12 platforms side by side

Each row records what the platform’s own help, policy or listing pages said on October 9, 2026. “Some listings” means we saw both listings with and without a free report, or the platform says so. CarMax, Carvana and Hertz Car Sales could not be read from our location and are not included.

The provider most platforms use is Experian AutoCheck. Cars & Bids and Bring a Trailer listings linked CARFAX reports on the modern cars we sampled.

Summary versus full report

TrueCar listings show a one-line AutoCheck summary — accidents, owners, title, use — with a “View full report” link; the listing data we read marked the full report as not free on 15 of 15 listings. CarGurus says its vehicle-history section comes from AutoCheck and shows flagged issues automatically. A summary can rule a car out; it cannot rule one in, because it omits dates, locations and the source of each record.

When a free full report exists, open it and check the VIN and the report date. A report generated months before the sale can miss a recent accident, title transfer or auction.

If the marketplace listing has no free report

Ask the seller first: dealers usually hold a CARFAX or AutoCheck subscription and can send a current report for the exact VIN. A private seller may not, and a screenshot from a seller is a lead, not proof — the VIN, date and provider must match the car.

If no one supplies one, check title brands and total losses through a DOJ-listed NMVTIS provider (free at Carsforsale.com, $9.98 at Titlecheck.us), recalls at NHTSA and theft at NICB, all free or near it. For auction records, photos and damage descriptions, VIN Lookup sells the original ClearVIN report for $14.99 once, or three for $29.99 when you are comparing several cars.

Buyer checklist

  1. Look for a free report link on the listing.
  2. Open the full report, not only the summary.
  3. Check the report date.
  4. Ask the dealer for a current report if none is linked.
  5. Match the VIN in the listing to the car.
  6. Check open recalls free at NHTSA.

What this research cannot prove

  • Platform policies and listing features change; we read them on October 9, 2026, from outside the United States.
  • A free report or summary shows only what was reported to its provider.
  • Listings we sampled may not represent every listing on the platform.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Which car sites give a free CARFAX?

On October 9, 2026, Cars & Bids linked CARFAX reports and states every vehicle gets a free report; Bring a Trailer listings we sampled linked CARFAX PDFs. Most other platforms use AutoCheck.

Does Facebook Marketplace give a vehicle history report?

None of the Facebook help pages we could read mention one. Ask the seller for the VIN and check it yourself.

Is the AutoCheck summary on TrueCar or CarGurus a full report?

No. It is a summary line; the full report is a separate document, and TrueCar’s listing data marked it as not free.

What if there is no free report?

Ask the seller, run free NHTSA and NICB checks, an NMVTIS report for title brands, and a full report — VIN Lookup’s costs $14.99 once.
