See what the paid report includes →eBay says most Motors listings come with a free vehicle history report from AutoCheck. Sellers who list with eBay’s own tools get the AutoCheck report added at no charge; vehicles built before 1981, without a 17-digit VIN, or not made for the U.S. market are not eligible. If a listing has none, eBay says the buyer can buy one. Separately, eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection page (read October 9, 2026) covers up to $500,000 per eligible Secure Purchase transaction completed from August 1, 2026, and up to $100,000 before that date.
- Free AutoCheck on most listings, added by eBay’s listing tools.
- No free report for pre-1981, non-17-digit or non-U.S.-market vehicles.
- Vehicle Purchase Protection: up to $500,000 from August 1, 2026, via Secure Purchase.
- Claims must be filed within 45 days of the listing end date.
One VIN. One $14.99 history report.
For $14.99, VIN Lookup delivers an original ClearVIN vehicle-history PDF for the VIN you enter. ClearVIN appears on the DOJ provider list; VIN Lookup resells its report and is not itself listed as an NMVTIS provider. The report may include data beyond the NMVTIS core, but the records returned vary by VIN.
The VIN decode is free. No card is needed until you choose to buy; applicable tax is shown at checkout. A missing record is not proof that an event never happened.Original provider PDF

When the free AutoCheck appears
eBay’s buying help says many sellers include an AutoCheck report and that, if a seller has not, the buyer has the option to buy one. Its selling help says listings created with eBay’s tools include the AutoCheck report at no additional charge, while dealers using third-party listing tools subscribe to AutoCheck separately.
The selling help lists vehicles that are not eligible: those manufactured before 1981, those without a 17-digit VIN and those not intended for the U.S. market. For a classic or imported car on eBay, expect no free report.

What Vehicle Purchase Protection covers
The protection page applies to vehicles of $100 or more bought through Secure Purchase, with buyer, seller and vehicle in the United States or Canada and no approved claim in the previous 180 days. Damage coverage applies to undisclosed engine, transmission, body or frame damage with repairs over $1,000, and not to vehicles under open recall.
eBay states that the program is not insurance, a warranty or a remedy for buyer’s remorse. Its older help article still mentions $100,000; the current protection page dates the $500,000 limit from August 1, 2026.
If the eBay Motors listing has no free report
Ask the seller first: dealers usually hold a CARFAX or AutoCheck subscription and can send a current report for the exact VIN. A private seller may not, and a screenshot from a seller is a lead, not proof — the VIN, date and provider must match the car.
If no one supplies one, check title brands and total losses through a DOJ-listed NMVTIS provider (free at Carsforsale.com, $9.98 at Titlecheck.us), recalls at NHTSA and theft at NICB, all free or near it. For auction records, photos and damage descriptions, VIN Lookup sells the original ClearVIN report for $14.99 once, or three for $29.99 when you are comparing several cars.
