How to Read a VIN: A Practical 17-Character Guide

Read a modern U.S. VIN by separating its manufacturer, vehicle-description, check-digit, model-year, plant, and serial sections.

The six blocks that matter

Characters 1–3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier. Characters 4–8 are the vehicle descriptor section, but their exact meaning is manufacturer-specific. Position 9 is calculated from the rest of the VIN for vehicles subject to the U.S. check-digit rule. Position 10 uses a repeating year code, so vehicle context matters. Position 11 points to an assembly plant, and the final six characters distinguish the individual vehicle within a production sequence.

Do not infer trim, engine, or drivetrain by eyeballing a code from a different make. Use NHTSA’s decoder or manufacturer documentation because the descriptor positions are assigned differently across manufacturers and model lines.

Turn a decode into an identity check

Run the complete 17-character VIN, then compare the returned make, model, model year, body class, and engine information with the vehicle. A single transcription error can produce an invalid result or a different vehicle. If a field is blank, that means the source did not return it; it is not permission to guess.

Inspect at least two physical VIN locations. The windshield plate should agree with the driver-door certification label and the title or registration. Misaligned rivets, a label laid over another label, altered typography, or conflicting VINs call for a pause and professional verification.

Identity comes before history

A history report is only as relevant as the VIN entered. Establish the identity first, retain a photo of the VIN, and use that exact string for title, theft, recall, and paid-report searches. This prevents a seller’s typo—or a substituted VIN—from making a clean-looking report appear relevant to the wrong car.
