Is it legal to look up a license plate?
A vehicle-only lookup can be lawful, but the permitted data and purpose depend on the source and applicable law. The federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act restricts use and disclosure of personal information from state motor-vehicle records and lists exceptions; it does not authorize every plate-based search. Can I buy a history report with only a plate number?
