Vehicle identity. The free check validates the 17 characters and returns year, make and model, factory specifications when the decoding source supplies them, and the source name with the retrieval time. That source is NHTSA vPIC, or a combined provider decode labelled 'Auto.dev VIN Decode API + NHTSA vPIC', depending on what returned for that VIN. It describes the vehicle as built, not what happened to it afterwards: the decode carries no history, and no account or payment card is required to run it.

The fields a decode can return
Beyond year, make and model, the normalised decode carries trim or series, body class, engine displacement or engine model, cylinder count, primary fuel type, transmission style or speeds, drive type, manufacturer, plant city and plant country. Anything the source does not supply is shown as “Not reported” rather than guessed at. The result also records the identity decode source — NHTSA vPIC, or a combined provider decode labelled 'Auto.dev VIN Decode API + NHTSA vPIC' — its API address and the retrieval timestamp — so you can see exactly what was checked and when.
NHTSA describes vPIC as a decode of manufacturer-submitted vehicle information, not a vehicle-history database. The source name and retrieval time shown by VIN Lookup document this lookup; they do not guarantee every specification field is present.

Why some fields come back empty
Coverage varies by source, jurisdiction, record type and date. A missing field means the source did not supply it for that VIN, not that the attribute does not exist. If year, make and model are all missing or the source returns an error, the decode is not treated as valid and no identity is asserted. On a production deployment, a separate licensed-provider preview may appear below the decode with a few history indicators; that panel is a different layer with its own limits.

Does the free check show the previous owner's name?
No. The VIN and plate tools are built for vehicle identity and non-personal research, not for obtaining an owner's name, address or contact details.
Why was my VIN rejected before any decode ran?
The validator requires exactly 17 characters and rejects the letters I, O and Q. It also compares the North American check digit at position nine and stops the lookup when it does not match, with the message 'The VIN format is valid, but the North American check digit does not match.'
Is the free check the same as a VIN identity preview?
Yes — that is the same layer. The identity preview shows year, make, model and selected factory details when the decoding source makes them available.
Do I get photos of the vehicle for free?
Sometimes a VIN-linked provider photo is returned and displayed; when none is returned, the free result page may show a clearly labelled example image of a similar vehicle, captioned as an example and never presented as the car being inspected. Photo availability is separate from report coverage.
