What does 'Secure checkout is temporarily unavailable' mean?

It means the purchase stopped before any payment began. That message ends with 'no payment was started', and your free VIN results stay available.

Answer

It means the purchase was stopped before any payment began. Those exact words come from the response we return when paid report purchasing is not active, and the full message ends “no payment was started.” Your free VIN results remain available. Wait a few minutes and try again from the same VIN. One related message is worded differently on purpose — it asks you to check your account first, because that outcome was not confirmed.

  • Messages that end with 'no payment was started' mean exactly that: the flow stopped before the payment provider.
  • One variant asks you to check your account before retrying, because the result could not be confirmed.
  • When the message ends 'no payment was started', retrying from the same VIN is the right response: no payment session exists to duplicate, so the retry creates the order for the first time — or, if the stopped attempt left an order that can no longer be resumed, the spent request identifier is refused and your browser starts a fresh one rather than a second payment.

The messages that confirm no charge

Several distinct stops can happen before your browser ever reaches the payment page, and each one says so in its own message. They differ in cause — purchasing closed, the order could not be saved, the checkout session could not be dispatched, provider report capacity unavailable — but they share the same ending, and none of them creates a payment.

In every one of these cases there is no order to pay for and no session at the payment provider, so there is nothing to cancel on your side. Trying again after a few minutes is the right response.

The message that asks you to check first

If the wording instead asks you to check your account before trying again — or says the request took too long and we could not confirm whether a checkout session was created — treat it differently. It appears after the request had already gone out to the payment provider, so we cannot truthfully claim nothing was created.

In that case, open My Reports and your order page before starting a second purchase. If a charge did complete, the purchase and any unused credits are there. The refund policy's eligible-request list covers being charged more than once for the same order, and asks you to contact support promptly with the checkout email, order ID and the last six characters of the VIN. Never send full payment-card details.

Steps

  1. Read whether the message ends with 'no payment was started'.
  2. If it does, wait a few minutes and retry from the same VIN result.
  3. If it asks you to check first, open My Reports before retrying.
  4. Keep the order reference and a screenshot of the message.
  5. Contact support for a duplicate charge with order ID, checkout email and the last six VIN characters.

What this does not cover

  • These messages describe our side of the flow; if you had already entered card details at the payment provider, check your order before paying again.
  • The refund policy describes a review of duplicate charges and delivery failures. It does not promise a particular outcome.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to press the button again?

It depends on which message you got. When it ends 'no payment was started', retrying from the same VIN is the right response: no payment session exists to duplicate, so the retry creates the order for the first time — or, if the stopped attempt left an order that can no longer be resumed, the spent request identifier is refused and your browser starts a fresh one rather than a second payment. When it asks you to check your account before trying again, or says we could not confirm whether a checkout session was created, do not simply press again — open My Reports and your order page first, because that attempt may already have created a session at the payment provider.

Does this mean my VIN was rejected?

No. An invalid VIN and a sandbox-restricted VIN each produce their own message naming the VIN. This message is about checkout availability.

How do I report a duplicate charge?

Use the contact page with the checkout email, order ID, the VIN's last six characters and a description of the issue. Duplicate charges are on the refund policy's eligible-review list.

Can I still get the free VIN result?

Yes. The message itself says your free VIN results remain available, and VIN decoding is separate from paid purchasing.
