Does a VIN decode show how many cylinders? NHTSA vPIC returns EngineCylinders for most gasoline and diesel vehicles, and blank for EVs and rotary engines.
NHTSA vPIC has the field, but manufacturers leave it blank on many vehicles. A blank is not an error, and no other decoder can fill it.
A VIN decode usually returns the cylinder count. NHTSA's free vPIC decoder carries an EngineCylinders field, and in a 69-VIN spot check it was populated for 57 vehicles — but it comes back blank for every battery-electric car, for rotary engines, and for some ordinary gasoline models. EngineConfiguration, which gives the layout (In-Line, V-Shaped), was filled for only 35.
How do I find the cylinders from a VIN?
- Copy the 17-character VIN from the driver-side windshield, the door-jamb certification label, and the title, and check that all three readings match before you decode anything.
- Run it through a free vPIC-backed decoder such as https://free-vin-lookup.com/check, or call NHTSA directly at https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/api/vehicles/DecodeVinValues/YOURVIN?format=json
- Read EngineCylinders for the count and EngineConfiguration for the layout, then combine them: 6 plus V-Shaped is a V6, 4 plus In-Line is an I4 or L4, 4 plus Horizontally Opposed is a flat-four.
- If EngineCylinders is blank, read DisplacementL and EngineModel in the same response. Those often survive when the count does not, and a code like 13B or 2AR-FE identifies the engine outright.
- Confirm against the vehicle. Open the hood and read the Vehicle Emission Control Information label for displacement and engine family, or count the ignition coils, since most modern engines use one per cylinder.
- If the model year offered more than one engine, check the 8th VIN character against the manufacturer's own VIN chart or factory service manual before ordering parts.

Where the VIN route stops for cylinders
- vPIC data is manufacturer-submitted and can be wrong. A 2001 Jeep Wrangler TJ 4.0L VIN returns EngineCylinders 6 with EngineConfiguration 'V-Shaped', though that engine is an inline six; 1997 and 2002 Wrangler VINs with the same 4.0L correctly return 'In-Line'.
- EngineConfiguration is the sparser of the two fields. Across 69 decoded VINs it was populated 35 times. Porsche 911 and 718, Subaru WRX and Impreza, BMW 328i, M3 and X5, VW Jetta and GTI, and Hyundai and Kia VINs all returned a blank layout even when EngineCylinders was filled.
- Battery-electric vehicles have no cylinders, and vPIC returns nothing rather than a zero. A 2023 Tesla Model 3 and a 2018 Nissan Leaf both come back with EngineCylinders and EngineConfiguration empty; FuelTypePrimary 'Electric' and ElectrificationLevel 'BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)' are what identify them.
- Rotary engines have rotors, not cylinders, and vPIC leaves both fields blank. 2006, 2007, and 2008 Mazda RX-8 VINs return no count and no configuration, only DisplacementL 1.3 and EngineModel '13B (1.3L) High Power'. 'Rotary' is a valid EngineConfiguration value in the vPIC lookup but did not appear in any decode we ran.
- Some ordinary gasoline vehicles are simply blank. 2015 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 Subaru Impreza, 2020 Nissan Versa, and 2020 Nissan Rogue Sport VINs returned displacement but no EngineCylinders, and passing the modelyear parameter does not fill it in. NHTSA's own response note says a missing value means it has no data on that variable.
Where to get it instead
- The Vehicle Emission Control Information label under the hood. Required on every US-market vehicle by 40 CFR 86.1807-01 and fixed where it is visible with the hood open. It states engine displacement and the engine family designation, which pins down the specific engine when vPIC's cylinder count is blank. - The 8th VIN character read against the manufacturer's own VIN chart. Positions 4 through 8 of the VIN are the manufacturer-assigned descriptor section under 49 CFR Part 565, and most US-market manufacturers put the engine code in position 8. The chart that translates it lives in the factory service manual or the manufacturer's decoding document, not in vPIC, so this route resolves engine variants vPIC reports only as a bare cylinder count. - Dealer parts department or manufacturer build data by VIN. Franchise dealer systems decode the full factory build record, including the engine RPO or sales code and the exact production variant. No free public decoder sees that data. This is the route for a rebuild, an engine swap, or any parts order where a wrong variant means a wrong part.

Parts-store catalogs are keyed to year, make, model, and engine, and some let you enter a VIN to fill those in for you. You do not need a store either way. NHTSA's decoder is free and public, and returns model year, cylinder count, displacement, and often an engine model code. Confirm the result against the under-hood label before buying parts.
How do I check if an engine is compatible with my car?
A VIN decode narrows it but does not settle it. vPIC gives cylinder count, layout, displacement, and sometimes an engine model code, so matching those between donor and recipient is the first filter. How do I identify a 4-cylinder engine block for a specific car model?
Not from the VIN. A decode tells you what engine the car left the factory with, not which block is in it now. The block itself carries a casting number and, on most engines, a stamped engine number, usually on the deck, the bellhousing flange, or the front of the block. Match that casting number in the manufacturer's parts catalog.
How can I decode my Duramax VIN to find out the engine details?
Decode the whole VIN, then read EngineModel. A 2020 Silverado VIN returns EngineCylinders 8, EngineConfiguration V-Shaped, DisplacementL 6.6, and EngineModel 'L5P - DI, DURAMAX, GEN 5, VAR. 1', the Duramax RPO for that generation. What does the number 18436572 signify in automotive or engine contexts?
It is a firing order, not a VIN field. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 is the firing order of the Chevrolet small-block V8 and the Chrysler LA and Magnum V8s. GM's later LS V8s use 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3, and Ford V8s differ again. No VIN decoder returns firing order; vPIC carries EngineCylinders and EngineConfiguration only. Can I look up an engine serial number from the VIN?
No. The VIN identifies the vehicle, while the engine serial number is stamped on the engine and tracked by the manufacturer, not by NHTSA. vPIC carries EngineModel, a family name such as 2AR-FE or L5P, but has no serial number field. To trace a serial number, read the stamping on the block and take it to a dealer parts department.
