Drive Type by VIN: FWD, RWD, AWD or 4WD

A VIN decode returns drive type only when the automaker filed it with NHTSA. What vPIC's DriveType field holds, why 4x2 is ambiguous, and where to look next.

NHTSA vPIC has the field, but manufacturers leave it blank on many vehicles. A blank is not an error, and no other decoder can fill it.

Direct answer

Sometimes — a VIN decode returns drive type only when the manufacturer reported it to NHTSA. The free vPIC decoder has a DriveType field carrying values like FWD/Front-Wheel Drive, AWD/All-Wheel Drive and 4WD/4-Wheel Drive/4x4, but it comes back blank on many passenger cars: a 2018 Ford Mustang decodes clean with DriveType empty. A blank means missing data, not two-wheel drive.

How do I find the drive type from a VIN?

  1. Enter the 17-character VIN at https://free-vin-lookup.com/check, or call NHTSA's vPIC endpoint directly, and read the DriveType field in the result.
  2. If DriveType returns FWD/Front-Wheel Drive, RWD/Rear-Wheel Drive, AWD/All-Wheel Drive or 4WD/4-Wheel Drive/4x4, that is the manufacturer's own filed answer and you are done.
  3. If it returns 4x2, stop there. That value says two of four wheels are driven but not which axle: a front-drive 2018 Toyota Prius and a rear-drive 2018 Toyota Tacoma 2WD both decode as 4x2.
  4. If DriveType is blank, check ErrorCode. ErrorCode 0 means the VIN decoded cleanly and NHTSA simply holds no drive-type value for that vehicle — re-running with the modelyear parameter does not fill it in, which we confirmed on a 2018 Ford Mustang and a 2023 Tesla Model 3.
  5. For an electric vehicle with a blank DriveType, read EVDriveUnit instead. It returns Single Motor, Dual Motor, Triple Motor or Quad Motor; two or more motors means more than one axle is driven, while Single Motor does not say which axle.
  6. Confirm on the vehicle: pull the window sticker from the automaker's owner site using the VIN, look for a driveshaft and differential at both ends rather than CV axles at one end only, and check for a transfer-case lever or a 2H/4H/4L dial in the cabin.

Where the VIN route stops for drive type

  • vPIC leaves DriveType blank on many mainstream vehicles. In a 34-VIN spot check spanning model years 1994 to 2023, the field was empty on 9 of them, including a 2018 Ford Mustang, a 2016 BMW 328i, a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta, a 2018 Hyundai Elantra, a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier and a 2017 Tesla Model S.
  • The value 4x2 does not name the driven axle. Of the 25 populated results in that same vPIC sample, 8 came back as 4x2, covering both front-drive cars (2018 Toyota Prius, 2019 Honda Civic) and rear-drive trucks (2018 Toyota Tacoma, 2020 Chevrolet Silverado).
  • vPIC reports what the manufacturer submitted, not the marketing name. It returns 4WD/4-Wheel Drive/4x4 for a 2018 Subaru Outback and a 2018 Mazda CX-5, both sold as all-wheel drive, so the AWD and 4WD values are not applied consistently across makes.
  • Coverage varies inside a single make. vPIC returns AWD/All-Wheel Drive for a 2020 Tesla Model X but blank for a 2017 Model S, a 2023 Model 3 and a 2023 Model Y.
  • Federal rules never required drive type in the VIN. 49 CFR 565.15, Table I, lists what positions 4 through 8 must make decipherable — make, line, series, body type, engine type and restraints, plus GVWR or brake system for MPVs and trucks. Drive type appears for no vehicle class, so any vPIC value is voluntary manufacturer data.

Where to get it instead

  • Window sticker or build data rebuilt from your VIN. Most automakers' owner portals regenerate the original Monroney window sticker from a VIN, and it names the exact configuration as built (for example "SR5 4x4" or "xDrive40i"). A franchised dealer for the make can pull the same record. This is the most reliable free answer for one specific vehicle, and it works when vPIC returns nothing.
  • Inspect the vehicle itself. Look underneath: a driveshaft running to a differential at both ends means all four wheels can be driven; CV axles at one end only means two-wheel drive, and which end they are on tells you front or rear. A transfer-case lever or a 2H/4H/4L dial in the cabin means selectable 4WD. Badging (4x4, AWD, xDrive, quattro, 4MATIC) supports this but can be removed or added.
  • EPA and DOE fuel economy database. fueleconomy.gov carries an explicit drive field per configuration, with values such as Front-Wheel Drive and Rear-Wheel Drive, and it lists drivetrain variants as separate models ("4Runner 2WD" and "4Runner 4WD"). It is keyed to year, make, model and engine rather than to a VIN, so you must already know your trim and engine to land on the right row. Source →
  • vPIC EVDriveUnit field for electric vehicles. When DriveType is blank on an EV, EVDriveUnit sometimes still returns a value: Single Motor, Dual Motor, Triple Motor or Quad Motor. A 2023 Tesla Model 3 with an empty DriveType returned Single Motor, and a 2023 Rivian R1T returned Quad Motor. How can I identify what type of drivetrain my vehicle has?

Decode the VIN first and read the DriveType field. NHTSA's free vPIC decoder returns it when the manufacturer filed it, and you can run a VIN at https://free-vin-lookup.com/check. If the field is blank or shows 4x2, the VIN will not settle it: pull the original window sticker from the automaker's owner site, or look under the vehicle for a driveshaft and differential at both ends.

Does the VIN tell you if a car is AWD or 4WD?

Only when the manufacturer chose to encode it and filed the meaning with NHTSA. Federal rule 49 CFR 565.15, Table I, lists what VIN positions 4 through 8 must identify: make, line, series, body type, engine type, restraints, plus GVWR or brake system on trucks and MPVs. Drive type is not on that list for any vehicle class, so coverage is voluntary and uneven.

What does 4x2 mean in a VIN decode?

It means two of the four wheel positions are driven, and nothing more. It does not name the driven axle. In our vPIC sample a front-drive 2018 Toyota Prius and a rear-drive 2018 Toyota Tacoma 2WD both came back 4x2, as did a 2019 Honda Civic and a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado LT. Read 4x2 as two-wheel drive, then find the axle elsewhere.

How do I tell whether my Silverado is 2WD or 4WD from the VIN?

Usually you cannot from the VIN alone. A 2020 Silverado LT decodes as 4x2 in vPIC, which confirms two-wheel drive but not which axle, and other GM VINs return nothing at all. The reliable free routes are the window sticker rebuilt from your VIN on the automaker's owner site, or the GM Service Parts Identification label listing the build's RPO option codes, usually inside the glove box.

Can I check the VIN of my car at AutoZone and find details like drive type?

A parts counter runs your VIN through a commercial fitment catalog, which is licensed data rather than NHTSA's free decoder. Those catalogs often still ask the counter person to confirm 2WD or 4WD before showing a part, because the VIN frequently does not settle it. Expect the question, and have the window sticker or a look underneath the vehicle ready.

Why does my VIN decode say 4WD when the car is advertised as AWD?

Because vPIC reports the value the manufacturer submitted, not the marketing name. A 2018 Subaru Outback and a 2018 Mazda CX-5 both return 4WD/4-Wheel Drive/4x4 from vPIC even though both are sold as all-wheel drive. Why is the drive type blank for my Tesla?

Tesla did not file a drive type for every line. In our checks a 2020 Model X returned AWD/All-Wheel Drive, while a 2023 Model 3, a 2023 Model Y and a 2017 Model S all came back with DriveType empty.
