NHTSA vPIC has the field, but manufacturers leave it blank on many vehicles. A blank is not an error, and no other decoder can fill it.

Direct answer

A VIN decode returns your transmission only sometimes. NHTSA's free vPIC database carries two fields, TransmissionStyle and TransmissionSpeeds, but both are blank for most vehicles: federal law never required manufacturers to encode transmission in the VIN. When populated, you get a category like Automatic or CVT and a speed count, never a model designation like 6L80 or ZF 6HP.

How do I find the transmission from a VIN?

  1. Decode the VIN free at free-vin-lookup.com/check or NHTSA's own decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder, then read the TransmissionStyle and TransmissionSpeeds fields.
  2. If both come back empty, stop trying other decoders. Every US VIN decoder reads the same NHTSA vPIC dataset, so a blank field means the manufacturer never submitted the data — a different site cannot invent it.
  3. Read the engine fields instead: DisplacementL, EngineCylinders and FuelTypePrimary are returned on roughly nine VINs in ten, and engine plus model year plus GVWR usually narrows the vehicle to one or two possible transmissions.
  4. Find the option-code label on the vehicle. GM puts a Service Parts Identification label in the glovebox or trunk listing RPO codes, where transmission codes generally begin with M; many Ford certification labels on the driver's door jamb carry a two-character TR code.
  5. Read the transmission itself. Most units carry a stamped code, casting number, or a manufacturer tag or sticker on the case or pan — this is how ZF, Aisin and GM units are told apart when the VIN cannot.
  6. For a definitive answer, give the VIN to any franchised dealer's parts department. OEM parts catalogs resolve a VIN to the exact transmission assembly built into that vehicle, which no public decoder does.

Where the VIN route stops for transmission

  • The fields are blank far more often than they are filled. Across 70 unique VINs from model years 1993 to 2023 decoded through vPIC's DecodeVinValues endpoint, TransmissionStyle came back populated on 25 and TransmissionSpeeds on only 17. A 2013 Ford F-150, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu all returned both fields empty.
  • vPIC carries no transmission model designation at all. Its variable list (GetVehicleVariableList) contains exactly two entries under the Mechanical/Transmission group — ID 37, Transmission Style, and ID 63, Transmission Speeds. Nothing in the dataset can return 4L60E, 6T70, ZF 6HP26, A750E, or a GM RPO code.
  • Transmission is not a required VIN attribute. 49 CFR 565.15(b), Table I requires positions 4 through 8 to make make, line, series, body type, engine type, brake system and GVWR decipherable. Transmission appears on no vehicle class's list, which is why NHTSA-required fields like GVWR decode at 100% while transmission decodes at about a third.
  • The decode is pattern-level, not build-level. vPIC reads only VIN positions 1 through 8 and 10 — the VehicleDescriptor. Three different 2018 Corolla VINs sharing the descriptor 2T1BURHE*JC returned identical output; the serial number changes nothing. Where a trim was sold with both a manual and an automatic, vPIC cannot tell the two cars apart.
  • Electric vehicle coverage is inconsistent and loosely labeled. A 2023 Tesla Model 3 and a 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV return 'Automatic' with 1 speed, describing a single-speed reduction gear; a 2019 Nissan Leaf, 2017 Tesla Model S and 2013 Chevrolet Volt return blank — even though vPIC's own vocabulary contains a 'Direct Drive' value it does not apply to them.

Where to get it instead

  • The manufacturer's option-code label on the vehicle. This is the fastest reliable route when vPIC returns blank. GM's Service Parts Identification label, usually inside the glovebox or on the trunk lid, lists every RPO option code the vehicle was built with, and transmission RPOs generally start with M. Many Ford certification labels on the driver's door jamb carry a two-character TR code. These labels name the actual unit installed, which the VIN does not encode.
  • The identification tag or stamp on the transmission case. Nearly every transmission carries its own identity independent of the VIN: a stamped code or casting number on the housing, or a manufacturer tag or barcode sticker on the case or pan. This is the only way to separate variants that share a gear count — the ZF 6HP19, 6HP21, 6HP26 and 6HP28 are all six-speed automatics and all decode identically when they decode at all.
  • A franchised dealer's parts department, using your VIN. OEM parts catalogs are keyed to the factory build record rather than the VIN pattern, so they resolve a VIN to the exact transmission assembly, part number included. Parts departments do this lookup routinely and usually at no charge. This is the authoritative answer when you are buying a replacement unit and a wrong guess is expensive.
  • vPIC's engine and weight fields, to narrow the possibilities. The fields the VIN is legally required to encode do decode reliably, and they constrain the answer. In testing, GVWR returned on 100% of VINs, FuelTypePrimary on 97%, DisplacementL on 91% and EngineCylinders on 87%. How do I identify the correct ZF 6HP transmission model for my vehicle?

A VIN decode cannot separate the 6HP variants. vPIC returns at most Automatic with six speeds, which is true of 6HP19, 6HP21, 6HP26 and 6HP28 alike; they differ by input-torque rating, not gear count. The variant is printed on the ZF part-number tag or sticker on the transmission case or pan. A dealer parts lookup by VIN also resolves it.

How do I know if my vehicle needs a 6T30 or 6T50 transmission?

Not from the VIN alone. Both are GM six-speed transaxles that vPIC reports identically, as Automatic with six speeds, when it reports anything at all. They differ in torque capacity and are matched to engine size. Check the RPO code on the SPID label, or the identification tag on the transaxle, and confirm with a parts department before ordering.

Can I check the VIN of my car at AutoZone and find details like engine type or year?

Yes for year, make, model and engine; not reliably for transmission. Parts-store lookups run against a commercial catalog and usually ask you to confirm your transmission rather than reporting it, because the catalog cannot resolve it from the VIN either. NHTSA's free decoder returns engine displacement and cylinder count on about nine VINs in ten, which is the same information.
