Engine Specs by VIN: What a Free Decode Returns
A VIN decode returns engine displacement and cylinder count from NHTSA's free vPIC data, plus horsepower and the engine family code when the maker filed it.
NHTSA vPIC has the field, but manufacturers leave it blank on many vehicles. A blank is not an error, and no other decoder can fill it.
Yes — a VIN decode returns most engine specs. NHTSA's free vPIC database gave displacement in liters and cylinder count for every combustion vehicle we tested, and engine configuration, horsepower or the manufacturer's engine family code for roughly two-thirds. Coverage depends on what each manufacturer filed. Battery-electric VINs return no engine fields, and vPIC never carries an engine serial number.
How do I find the engine from a VIN?
- Copy the 17-character VIN from the lower driver-side windshield, the driver door jamb sticker, your registration or your insurance card.
- Decode it against NHTSA's vPIC database. free-vin-lookup.com/check queries vPIC directly and costs nothing, as does NHTSA's own decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder.
- Read DisplacementL and EngineCylinders first. Both were filled for every combustion vehicle in our 40-VIN test. Add EngineConfiguration and you have the everyday shorthand: 3.5, 6 and V-Shaped is a 3.5L V6.
- Check EngineModel for the manufacturer's engine family code — LC9, 2GR-FKS, J35Y7, L26. Order parts against that string, not against the displacement alone.
- Do not try to read the engine off a single VIN character yourself. 49 CFR 565 leaves positions four through eight to each manufacturer, so the eighth character is the engine code on Ford and GM but not on Honda, where changing it alone makes the decode fail entirely.
- For every field that came back blank, go to the vehicle itself: the underhood emissions label for the engine family code, the block stamping for the serial number, the door jamb tire and loading label for GVWR and tire size.
Every value NHTSA's vPIC controlled vocabularies allow in the Engine group's coded fields, pulled from GetVehicleVariableValuesList. Displacement, cylinder count and horsepower are free numeric fields with no fixed list.

Where the VIN route stops for engine
- vPIC has no engine serial number field. Across the 144 variables NHTSA publishes at GetVehicleVariableList, the closest is Engine Model, which NHTSA defines as the name a manufacturer applies to a family of engines — not the number stamped on your block.
- Battery-electric VINs return nothing in the engine fields. A 2017 Tesla Model S, a 2023 Model Y, a 2018 Model 3 and a 2016 Nissan Leaf all came back with DisplacementL, EngineCylinders, EngineConfiguration and EngineModel empty; only FuelTypePrimary (Electric) and ElectrificationLevel (BEV) were populated.
- Turbo is blank far more often than it is 'No' — filled on 7 of our 40 decodes. A 2018 Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost and a 2019 F-250 6.7L Power Stroke both returned an empty Turbo field despite being turbocharged. Blank means unfiled, not naturally aspirated.
- EngineHP was missing on 10 of 33 combustion vehicles, and on hybrids its meaning shifts: vPIC returns 96 for a 2018 Prius (the 1.8L engine alone, not the 121 hp combined system) but 185 for a 2013 Fusion Energi, close to that car's combined output. NHTSA defines the field as horsepower at the engine output shaft.
- Coverage tracks manufacturer submissions, not model year. A 1991 Acura NSX decoded with displacement, cylinders, configuration, horsepower, engine model and valvetrain, while a 2006 Corvette returned every engine field empty alongside error code 14: unable to provide information based on the manufacturer submission.
Where to get it instead
- Engine block stamping or casting number. The only place an engine serial number exists. On most V8s it is a machined pad at the front of the block or near the bellhousing; on inline engines it usually sits on the side above the oil pan rail. Read it off the vehicle — no VIN database carries it.
- Underhood emissions control information label. Federal law requires a permanent label carrying the EPA engine family code, displacement and emissions standard. - fueleconomy.gov vehicle records (DOE and EPA). Lists every engine and transmission combination offered for a given year, make and model, with displacement, cylinders and fuel economy. Use it to narrow down which engines your vehicle could have when vPIC leaves EngineHP or EngineConfiguration empty. Source →
- Manufacturer VIN portal or window sticker reprint. Ford, GM, Toyota and most other makers will return the as-built option list for a VIN through their owner site or a dealer parts department. That build record names the engine option code, which vPIC frequently does not carry.

How do I identify the number of cylinders in my car engine?
Decode the VIN. NHTSA's vPIC returns EngineCylinders as a plain number, and it was populated for 32 of the 33 combustion vehicles we tested — a 2015 Hyundai Sonata was the only gap. Pair it with EngineConfiguration to get the familiar shorthand: 6 cylinders plus V-Shaped is a V6. Battery-electric vehicles return nothing in this field.
Can I look up an engine serial number from the VIN?
No. vPIC carries no engine serial number field anywhere in its 144 variables. The closest is EngineModel, which NHTSA defines as the family name a manufacturer gives an engine — LC9, 2GR-FKS, J35Y7. Serial and casting numbers are stamped on the block itself, usually on a machined pad near the bellhousing or at the front of the deck. No VIN database holds them.
What is the best way to identify the engine type in my Chevrolet Silverado using the VIN?
On GM trucks the eighth VIN character is the engine code, and vPIC translates it into the RPO family. A 2011 Silverado with '3' in position eight decoded as LC9, 5.3L, 8 cylinders, V-Shaped, flex fuel. A 2015 2500HD with '8' decoded as LML, 6.6L, diesel, turbo — the Duramax. Change only that character and the engine vPIC returns changes with it.
Can I check the VIN of my car at AutoZone and find details like engine type or year?
Retail parts sites, AutoZone included, do offer VIN lookup, but they use it to pin a catalog fitment record rather than to show you NHTSA's data. How do I check if an engine is compatible with my car?
Match the engine family code, not the displacement. Two 5.3L GM V8s can be an LC9 and an L83 with different blocks, injection and accessory drives. Decode both VINs, compare EngineModel, DisplacementL, EngineCylinders and ValveTrainDesign, then confirm against the block stamping — vPIC describes the vehicle as originally built, not what is bolted in today.
How do I identify the correct engine model for a 2004 Grand Prix?
Decode the VIN. A 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix VIN we ran returned DisplacementL 3.8, EngineCylinders 6 and EngineModel L26 — the 3800 Series III V6. GM puts the engine code in the eighth VIN character, so a different character there yields a different engine model. EngineHP came back empty on that decode, which is normal for GM records of that era.
How can I identify the year and engine type of a specific Acura Vigor?
The tenth VIN character encodes the model year, and vPIC returns it as ModelYear. A Vigor VIN we decoded came back as a 1993 Acura Vigor with DisplacementL 2.5, EngineCylinders 5 and EngineModel G24A1 — the inline-five that made the car unusual. Older vehicles decode fine when the manufacturer filed the data, and Honda's records reach further back than most.
How do I verify the authenticity of an Audi Q7 engine before buying?
A VIN decode cannot prove it. vPIC reports the engine the vehicle was built with, so it gives you a baseline, not proof. Print the decode, then compare it physically against the engine block stamping, the underhood emissions label's engine family code, and the engine code letters cast into the block. A mismatch between the decode and the stamping is the signal to walk.
