Trim Level by VIN: What a Free Decode Returns
NHTSA's free vPIC decoder returns Trim and Series for many VINs but leaves them blank for others. See what a VIN decode gives you and where to get the rest.
NHTSA vPIC has the field, but manufacturers leave it blank on many vehicles. A blank is not an error, and no other decoder can fill it.
Sometimes. NHTSA's free vPIC decoder carries Trim, Trim2, Series and Series2, but trim is only partially populated: it came back blank for 9 of the 25 VINs we decoded, and several others returned a list of candidate trims rather than one. Manufacturers are not required to encode trim in the VIN, so coverage varies by brand and model year.
How do I find the trim from a VIN?
- Enter the 17-character VIN at https://free-vin-lookup.com/check, which decodes through NHTSA's vPIC database at no cost and with no account.
- Read the Trim field first. A single value such as 'LT', 'Grand Touring' or 'xDrive40i' is the trim the manufacturer reported to NHTSA. A slash- or comma-separated list means vPIC holds several candidates for that VIN pattern and cannot narrow it further.
- Check Series next. It usually carries a platform or model code rather than a marketing trim name: Ram 1500 returns 'DT', a 2019 Porsche 911 returns 'Type 991', a 2018 Prius returns 'ZVW50L/ZVW51L'.
- Check Series2 and Trim2. Series2 in practice holds a body descriptor, not a trim ('Open Body', 'Double Cab', 'Wagon body style'). Trim2 is rare but occasionally holds an internal grade: a 2018 Toyota RAV4 returned Trim blank and Trim2 'M Grade'.
- If all four fields are blank or ambiguous, pull the original window sticker (Monroney label) by VIN from the manufacturer's owner portal, where the brand offers one, or ask a franchised dealer to print the factory build record.
- Confirm against the vehicle itself: exterior badging, the option-code or build sticker (glovebox or center console on GM vehicles, under a seat or behind trim on many Stellantis vehicles), and the certification label on the driver's door jamb for GVWR and build date.

Where the VIN route stops for trim
- vPIC left Trim blank for 9 of the 25 VINs we decoded on 27 August 2026, including a 2023 Tesla Model 3, a 2013 Ford F-150, a 2008 Chevrolet Corvette and a 2020 Kenworth T680.
- When vPIC does populate Trim it is often a candidate list rather than one answer. A 2021 Ram 1500 returned 'Big Horn, Lonestar'; a 2018 Hyundai Tucson returned 'SE Pop, SE Plus, Eco, Sport, Value, Ultimate Base/Ultimate'. vPIC stores trim against a VIN pattern, not against an individual vehicle.
- Series2 is not a second trim field. In every sample where vPIC populated it, the value described the body: 'Open Body' on a Jeep Wrangler, 'Double Cab' on a Toyota Tacoma, 'Wagon body style' on a Kia Sportage and a Toyota RAV4.
- Heavy trucks and motorcycles returned no trim at all in our sample. A Kenworth T680, a Volvo VNL and a Harley-Davidson Street Glide all came back with Trim and Trim2 empty, though the Harley did return Series 'FLHX'.
- vPIC carries no optional-equipment data. Of the 144 variables in NHTSA's GetVehicleVariableList there is no field for option packages, factory options, RPO codes or paint code, and the one Base Price field is only occasionally filled (a 2018 Jeep Wrangler returned 31445.00; four other VINs we checked returned nothing).
Where to get it instead
- Manufacturer window sticker (Monroney label) by VIN. The window sticker names the exact trim, every factory option and the as-built price. It is required on new cars by the Automobile Information Disclosure Act (15 U.S.C. 1232), but no government agency archives it. Several brands republish it by VIN on their own owner or window-sticker sites, generally for recent model years only. Source →
- Build sheet or option-code sticker inside the vehicle. GM prints Regular Production Option (RPO) codes on a sticker in the glovebox or on the center console lid. Stellantis build sheets (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram) are often left physically in the car, under a seat or behind interior trim. These codes define the trim and every option fitted at the factory.
- Franchised dealer parts or service department, using the VIN. A dealer for that brand can pull the factory build record by VIN, which names the trim and lists every option code. This is the authoritative source whenever vPIC returns a blank Trim field or a list of candidates, and it works for older vehicles that owner portals no longer cover.
- Commercial VIN data providers that license OEM build data. Paid VIN APIs and vehicle history reports license build data directly from manufacturers and typically return a single trim, the option packages and the paint code where vPIC cannot. NHTSA's free vPIC does not include this data and is not a substitute for it.

How do I find out the trim level of my vehicle?
Start with a free VIN decode. NHTSA's vPIC returns a Trim field, and for many vehicles it names the trim directly - 'LT', 'Grand Touring', 'xDrive40i'. When it comes back blank or lists several trims, the original window sticker from the manufacturer's owner portal, or the option-code sticker in the glovebox, gives the exact answer.
Can I look up a vehicle's window sticker using its VIN?
Often yes, but not through NHTSA. The free vPIC decoder holds no window-sticker data - no options, no packages, no equipment list. Several manufacturers republish the original Monroney label by VIN on their own owner or window-sticker sites, usually for recent model years only. For older vehicles, a franchised dealer can print the build record from the VIN.
How do I find the build sheet for my truck or SUV using the VIN?
Through the manufacturer, not through a VIN decoder. vPIC returns no build sheet, no option codes and no packages - none of the 144 fields it decodes covers optional equipment. Stellantis build sheets are often physically in the vehicle, under a seat or behind interior trim. Otherwise a dealer's parts department can pull the factory build record by VIN.
How do I identify the specific GM RPO codes on my vehicle?
Look for the RPO sticker, usually in the glovebox or on the center console lid on GM vehicles. It lists three-character Regular Production Option codes covering trim, paint, axle ratio and every factory option. A VIN decode will not give you these: NHTSA's vPIC carries no option-code field of any kind.
Why does my VIN decode show several trims separated by slashes or commas?
Because vPIC stores trim against a VIN pattern, not against your specific car. When one pattern covers several trims, it returns all of them. A 2018 Toyota Prius decoded to 'Two Eco/Three/Three Touring/Four/Four Touring', and a 2019 Porsche 911 to 'Carrera S, Carrera GTS / Carrera 4S, Carrera 4 GTS'. Only the window sticker or the factory build record narrows that to one.
Where can I look up a vehicle's Monroney label online?
On the manufacturer's own site, where one is offered. The Monroney label is required by the Automobile Information Disclosure Act, but no government agency archives it, and NHTSA's VIN decoder does not carry it. Brands that publish it by VIN generally cover only recent model years. A franchised dealer can reprint it for older vehicles.
Are there free options to look up a VIN online?

How do I identify the different trim levels of an older vehicle like a 1991 GMC Sonoma?
vPIC coverage thins for older vehicles, and a decode may return the model with no trim at all. For pre-2000 GM vehicles the RPO sticker in the glovebox is the reliable source. The model's factory service manual and original sales brochure list which trims existed that year, which lets you match the codes you find.
