What a VIN Can and Cannot Tell You
Field by field, what a free VIN decode actually returns from NHTSA vPIC — engine, transmission, GVWR, plant — and which specs it never carries, with where to get those instead.
Each verdict came from decoding real VINs against the live NHTSA API, not from the documentation.
A free VIN decode returns available factory identity, not a complete record of how the vehicle is equipped today. NHTSA’s vPIC database can provide body class, model year, plant and GVWR, and may provide engine, transmission, drive type and trim when the manufacturer submitted them. It has no paint colour, tire size or towing-capacity field. A blank vPIC field is unknown in this public dataset; a separate manufacturer build record may contain it.

Why so many fields come back blank
- Federal rule 49 CFR 565 requires only a limited set of attributes to be decipherable from the VIN: make, line, series, body type, engine type, brake system and gross vehicle weight rating. Everything else a decoder shows is submitted voluntarily.
- A decode reads only VIN positions 1 through 8 and position 10 — the part that describes the model, not the individual vehicle. Two cars off the same line with different options decode identically.
- This free decoder reads NHTSA vPIC. A blank field means that source did not return a value; a manufacturer build record tied to the full VIN may provide more detail. Do not infer a missing field from a model-year average.
- None of these fields carry history. Title brands, salvage records, odometer readings, theft records and liens are separate databases with their own coverage limits.

What information can I get from a VIN for free?
Vehicle identity and factory specification: make, model, model year, body class, assembly plant, GVWR, and usually engine displacement, cylinder count and fuel type. NHTSA publishes this through its free vPIC database, and our decoder at free-vin-lookup.com/check reads it directly. A decode returns no title, accident, odometer or ownership history.
Why do different VIN decoders give me different results?
They may use different sources. Our free decoder reads NHTSA vPIC; a blank field there may be available from a manufacturer build record or another documented source. Some sites infer equipment from the model, which does not prove the equipment fitted to the exact VIN.
Can a VIN tell me the paint colour of my car?
Not from the VIN characters or NHTSA vPIC alone. A manufacturer build record linked to the VIN may list the original colour. For the factory paint code, check the physical label on the vehicle, usually on the driver-side door jamb, and confirm with the manufacturer.
Does the VIN show the trim level?
Sometimes. vPIC has Trim and Series fields, but manufacturers populate them inconsistently, and VIN positions 4 through 8 often encode a range of trims rather than one. Where two trims shared a descriptor, no decoder can separate them from the VIN alone.
Is a VIN decode the same as a vehicle history report?
No. A decode identifies the vehicle as it left the factory. Title brands, salvage and total-loss records, odometer readings, theft records, liens and accident history each come from separate databases and are not established by decoding the VIN.

Because the manufacturer never submitted it.
