A free VIN decode returns how the vehicle was built, not how it is equipped today. NHTSA’s vPIC database reliably carries body class, model year, plant and GVWR, carries engine, transmission, drive type and trim only when the manufacturer submitted them, and carries no paint colour, tire size or towing capacity at all. Every U.S. VIN decoder reads this same dataset, so a field blank in one is blank in all of them.

Why so many fields come back blank

  • Federal rule 49 CFR 565 requires only a limited set of attributes to be decipherable from the VIN: make, line, series, body type, engine type, brake system and gross vehicle weight rating. Everything else a decoder shows is submitted voluntarily.
  • A decode reads only VIN positions 1 through 8 and position 10 — the part that describes the model, not the individual vehicle. Two cars off the same line with different options decode identically.
  • Every U.S. VIN decoder reads the same NHTSA dataset. A field blank here is blank everywhere, and a site returning more than this is not reading the VIN.
  • None of these fields carry history. Title brands, salvage records, odometer readings, theft records and liens are separate databases with their own coverage limits.

What information can I get from a VIN for free?

Vehicle identity and factory specification: make, model, model year, body class, assembly plant, GVWR, and usually engine displacement, cylinder count and fuel type. NHTSA publishes this through its free vPIC database, and our decoder at free-vin-lookup.com/check reads it directly. A decode returns no title, accident, odometer or ownership history.

Why do different VIN decoders give me different results?

For factory specification, they mostly do not. Every U.S. VIN decoder queries the same NHTSA vPIC dataset, so a field blank in one decoder is blank in all of them. Sites that appear to return more are either reading a paid manufacturer build record, or inferring from the model rather than decoding the VIN.

Can a VIN tell me the paint colour of my car?

No. NHTSA vPIC has no colour field, so no VIN decode returns paint colour or paint code. The reliable route is the physical paint label on the vehicle, usually on the driver-side door jamb, which carries the manufacturer’s own colour code.

Does the VIN show the trim level?

Sometimes. vPIC has Trim and Series fields, but manufacturers populate them inconsistently, and VIN positions 4 through 8 often encode a range of trims rather than one. Where two trims shared a descriptor, no decoder can separate them from the VIN alone.

Is a VIN decode the same as a vehicle history report?

No. A decode identifies the vehicle as it left the factory. Title brands, salvage and total-loss records, odometer readings, theft records, liens and accident history each come from separate databases and are not established by decoding the VIN.
