Towing Capacity by VIN: What You Can and Cannot Get

A VIN decode does not return towing capacity. NHTSA's vPIC database has no tow-rating field. See what it does return, and where the real number comes from.

Direct answer

A VIN decode does not return towing capacity. NHTSA's vPIC database, which free VIN lookups run on, has no towing-capacity variable among its 144 fields: it returns a GVWR weight class instead, and leaves GCWR blank on every vehicle we tested. The real tow rating comes from the manufacturer's towing guide for your exact model year, engine, cab, drive type and axle ratio.

How do I find the towing capacity from a VIN?

  1. Decode the VIN free at https://free-vin-lookup.com/check to pin down model year, make, model, series, body class, engine displacement, drive type and GVWR class. These are the configuration facts a towing guide asks you to match. The decode will not include a tow number.
  2. Open the driver's door and read both labels. The certification label lists GVWR and front and rear GAWR. The Tire and Loading Information placard lists tire sizes, cold inflation pressures and payload. Neither label carries a towing capacity or a GCWR.
  3. Find the manufacturer's towing guide for that exact model year (Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide, GM or Chevrolet Trailering Guide, Ram Towing Guide, Toyota Towing Guide) and locate the row matching your engine, cab, bed length, drive type and rear axle ratio.
  4. Confirm the tow package and axle ratio from the window sticker, build sheet or the axle code on the door jamb label. These are not in the VIN and they are often the difference between two ratings thousands of pounds apart.
  5. Check the hitch itself. The receiver has its own stamped weight rating, and a weight-carrying rating lower than the weight-distributing one. Your limit is whichever number in the chain is lowest: truck rating, hitch rating, or the trailer's own GVWR.
  6. Do the arithmetic against reality. Usable trailer weight is GCWR minus the actual scale weight of your loaded truck with passengers and cargo aboard. Weigh it at a certified scale rather than working from a published curb weight.

Where the VIN route stops for towing capacity

  • vPIC has no towing-capacity variable at all. GetVehicleVariableList returns 144 variables, and none of them covers tow rating, tongue weight, hitch class or trailer weight rating. There is no field to be blank.
  • GCWR and GCWR_to do exist as vPIC variables (IDs 184 and 185) with the same class-band vocabulary as GVWR, but both came back empty on every vehicle we decoded, including a 2022 Ford F-350, a 2020 Ram 3500, a 2015 Freightliner M2 and a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia truck-tractor.
  • GVWR is returned as a band, not a number. A 2013 Ford F-150 decodes as 'Class 2F: 7,001 - 8,000 lb' — a 1,000-pound window, not the truck's actual GVWR. GVWR is also not universal: a 2021 Nissan Titan returned it blank.
  • CurbWeightLB was empty on every vehicle we tested, passenger cars and heavy trucks alike, so you cannot even derive a payload estimate from a vPIC decode.
  • Rear axle ratio, trailer-tow package and hitch type — the three variables that move a pickup's tow rating the most — are not vPIC variables and are not encoded in the VIN's standardized positions. They live on the window sticker and in the manufacturer's build data.

Where to get it instead

  • The manufacturer's towing guide for that model year. The only authoritative per-configuration tow rating. Every major brand publishes a yearly PDF (Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide, GM and Chevrolet Trailering Guide, Ram Towing Guide, Toyota Towing Guide) with rows keyed to engine, cab, bed, drive type and rear axle ratio. The owner's manual towing chapter carries the same figures plus maximum tongue weight.
  • The driver's door certification label — GVWR and GAWR. Required by 49 CFR Part 567, this label gives the vehicle's actual GVWR in pounds rather than the class band vPIC returns, plus front and rear gross axle weight ratings. It does not show towing capacity or GCWR, but GVWR minus your loaded weight is the honest ceiling on what the truck itself can carry. Source →
  • The Tire and Loading Information placard — payload. Required by FMVSS 110 (49 CFR 571.110), this placard on the driver's door jamb gives tire sizes, cold inflation pressures and the combined weight of occupants and cargo the vehicle can carry.   • A certified scale plus the published GCWR. Weigh the truck loaded as you will tow it — passengers, fuel, gear, hitch — at a CAT or public certified scale. Subtract that figure from the GCWR in the towing guide and you have the real trailer weight you can pull, which is almost always below the headline maximum the brand advertises.

How can I find out the towing capacity of my vehicle for trailers and RVs?

Use the manufacturer's towing guide for your exact model year, not a VIN decoder. Decode the VIN first to confirm year, make, model, series, engine and drive type, then match that configuration in the towing guide or the owner's manual towing chapter. For an RV, also check the hitch receiver's stamped rating and the trailer's own GVWR. The lowest number in that chain is your real limit.

Does a free VIN decoder show towing capacity?

No. Free decoders read NHTSA's vPIC database, and vPIC has no towing-capacity variable. Its 144 fields cover build data such as make, model, engine, body class, GVWR class and assembly plant, not performance ratings. A site showing a tow number beside a VIN is pulling it from a separate commercial specification database or estimating it from the model, not decoding it from the VIN.

Is towing capacity on the door jamb sticker?

No. The driver's door jamb carries two labels and neither is a tow rating. The certification label required by 49 CFR Part 567 lists GVWR and front and rear GAWR. The Tire and Loading Information placard required by FMVSS 110 lists tire sizes, cold inflation pressures and payload, the combined weight of occupants and cargo. What is the difference between GVWR, GCWR, payload and towing capacity?

GVWR is the maximum loaded weight of the truck by itself. GCWR is the maximum for truck and trailer combined. Payload is GVWR minus curb weight, covering people, cargo and trailer tongue weight. Towing capacity is roughly GCWR minus the truck's actual loaded weight. A vPIC decode returns a GVWR class band and leaves GCWR, curb weight and payload blank.

Can I calculate towing capacity from the GVWR a VIN decode returns?

No. GVWR describes only the truck's own loaded weight, and vPIC returns it as a band such as Class 2F: 7,001 to 8,000 lb, a 1,000-pound window. Towing capacity depends on GCWR, which vPIC leaves blank, plus rear axle ratio, hitch type and tow package. Two pickups that decode identically can be thousands of pounds apart.

Why do two trucks of the same year and model have different tow ratings?

Rear axle ratio, trailer-tow package, cab and bed configuration, drive type and hitch type all move the number, and only drive type appears reliably in a VIN decode. A 3.55 and a 3.73 rear axle on the same F-150 can differ by thousands of pounds. The window sticker or build sheet, not the VIN, tells you which options the truck actually left the plant with.

What is SAE J2807 and does it matter when comparing tow ratings?

SAE J2807 is the standardized tow-rating test the major brands adopted for light-duty pickups by roughly the 2015 model year, with Toyota moving earlier. Before it, each manufacturer measured tow capacity its own way and the numbers were not comparable across makes. When you compare guides from different model years, check whether both ratings are J2807-based, because some earlier figures were restated downward.

Where do I find my truck's GCWR if the VIN decode leaves it blank?

The owner's manual towing section and the manufacturer's towing guide both list GCWR by configuration. Some heavy-duty trucks also carry a trailer weight rating label on the door frame or in the glove box. vPIC defines GCWR as variables 184 and 185 and publishes the same class bands it uses for GVWR, but returned it empty for every vehicle we decoded, including a Class 8 truck-tractor.
